Frequently asked questions
How do you play?
The easiest way is to see it: the 55-second video shows a whole night, start to finish.
In short: a song plays, a challenge often drops — quiz, cover up, mix, odd one out… — and the whole table joins in. Every right answer scores points, and the winner walks away with their own album.
Is it a game of luck or of knowledge?
Mostly knowledge, with just enough luck that everyone stays in it.
What's up to you: your music knowledge, in all its forms. Spotting an artist from a corner of a sleeve, naming the film a song comes from, putting a mix back in order, sniffing out the odd one out, feeling which era a hit belongs to — every right answer earns points, and streaks earn more.
What's up to chance: which song you draw, and whether a challenge comes with it. Landing a song you know by heart, or one you've never heard, happens to everyone.
To balance the points, we played thousands of simulated games between players of different strengths. Whoever knows their music best wins most often, as it should be. But every way of playing has its chance: a player who shines mostly at the challenges still wins about one game in three against an opponent stronger at the rest, and one game in four goes down to the wire.
And for people who "don't know anything about music": the table can call out a letter, a token buys a song's decade, and Older or Newer is often won on instinct.
Do Childhood Nostalgia and Party Booster play like the other decks?
Almost. Two differences worth knowing:
- Childhood Nostalgia — every song comes from an animated or family film, and the year to find is the film's. People often remember the film better than the song! The deck has its own trivia and movie songs.
- Party Booster — 283 dance hits and no challenges: the music never stops for a question. With no challenges there are no tokens to win, but steals and doubts work as usual.
Do I need a subscription to play?
No. Every song plays a 30-second Apple Music preview, with no account or subscription. If you subscribe to Apple Music, you can turn on full songs in the game's settings.
How many phones do we need?
One iPhone for the whole table, solo or up to 6 players. It gets passed around, and lettered answers get called out across the room.
How do I put the game on the TV?
The TV shows the room screen — questions, choices, timelines — while the player keeps the phone in hand.
With AirPlay (Apple TV or a compatible TV)
- Put the iPhone and the TV on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Control Center: swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom.
- Tap Screen Mirroring (the icon of two overlapping rectangles).
- Pick your TV from the list. If a code appears on the TV, enter it on the iPhone.
- Open Needle Jam: the TV switches to the room screen, and the sound plays on the TV.
To stop: Control Center → Screen Mirroring → Stop Mirroring.
Without AirPlay
A plain USB-C to HDMI cable between the iPhone and the TV does the job. On an iPhone with a Lightning port, use Apple's Lightning to HDMI adapter.
Can we play with friends far away?
Yes, and it works really well. Start a FaceTime call, tap the screen-sharing button, then open Needle Jam: your friends see the game and hear the music, and everyone shouts their answer into the call.
The music doesn't play
Check that the iPhone is online and the volume is up: previews load when the song starts. The silent switch doesn't matter — the music plays in silent mode too.
Every song in the game has its Apple Music preview. With full songs on, if a song can't play in full, the game falls back to its preview.
The song title shows in Control Center
With full songs, iOS shows the title and cover in Control Center and on the Lock Screen — the game can't prevent it. The screen stays awake during a game to keep the Lock Screen away. To go further, turn on Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility): it blocks Control Center. The 30-second previews show nothing.
Can we play in French?
Yes. The language is chosen in the game's settings, independently of the iPhone's. The Québécois and Francophone decks are French only.
